She gives birth hours after discovering pregnancy

A British hairdresser gave birth to a baby girl - just three hours after being told she was pregnant by doctors. Ms Belinda Waite, 21, had been to her local hospital several times during the past nine months. She said doctors told her each time that she had a severe case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and gout. In fact she was pregnant with a healthy baby girl. Ms Waite's baby daughter, Louise Boyles, was born at home weighing 4kg. "I did feel like something was moving inside me as the months went on," Ms Waite said. "But I never considered I was pregnant and it doesn't seem to have crossed the doctors' minds," she added.
On Feb 6, the night before Louise was born; Ms Waite again went to hospital with pains throughout her body. At 10pm, doctors confirmed she was three months pregnant - in fact she was nine months pregnant - and baby Louise arrived four and a half hours later at 2.30am. The Daily Telegraph

US-style project 'will help young mothers'

A USA project which helps teenage mothers through pregnancy and the first two years of their baby's life is being trialled in the Lothians.
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said she was sure the £1.6m test programme would have a number of benefits.
The family nurse partnership is supporting first-time parents and single mothers under the age of 19.The project's six nurses will visit the young mothers every one or two weeks to give advice on child development.
Advice on issues including parenting skills, education and employment will also be on offer.The Lothian area was chosen for the test programme for a number of reasons, including its high number of teenage pregnancies.
Ms Sturgeon said on Tuesday: "In time, I want to see the kind of support that the family nurse partnership provides across the whole of Scotland."
The health secretary announced last year the test scheme would be set up when she saw a similar programme in Harlem, New York.
Speaking as she launched the new project, Ms Sturgeon said: "This isn't an untested programme, the evidence from programmes already up and running in the US shows that it is improving prenatal health, increasing employment for young mothers, resulting in fewer unintended pregnancies and helping to reduce child neglect."
Ms Sturgeon spoke as she met parents-to-be and nurses at the project's base in Craigmillar.
Melanie Hornett, NHS Lothian's nurse director, said: "We know that early emotional care is crucial to the development of a baby and that parenting skills are key to this.
"This programme helps mums and dads to focus on and respond to the needs of their baby as well as thinking about themselves."
The project has been running in North America for 30 years.

Exposure to common plastic may cause fertility defects

Exposure during pregnancy to Bisphenol A (BPA), a common component of plastics, causes permanent abnormalities in the uterus of offspring, boffins at Yale School of Medicine have discovered.
The findings were reported in the March issue of Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB J).
Led by Hugh S Taylor, MD, professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at Yale, the study is the first to show that BPA exposure permanently affects sensitivity to estrogen.
To reach the conclusion, Taylor and his team used two groups of mice, one exposed to BPA as a foetus during pregnancy and another exposed to a placebo. They examined gene expression and the amount of DNA modification in the uterus. They found that the mice exposed to BPA as a foetus had an exaggerated response to estrogens as adults, long after the exposure to BPA. The genes were permanently programmed to respond excessively to estrogen.
"The DNA in the uterus was modified by loss of methyl groups so that it responded abnormally in adulthood," said Taylor. "The gene expression was permanently epigenetically altered and the uterus became hyper-responsive to estrogens."
Taylor said that exposure to BPA as a foetus is carried throughout adulthood. "What our mothers were exposed to in pregnancy may influence the rest of our lives. We need to better identify the effect of environmental contaminants on not just crude measures such as birth defects, but also their effect in causing more subtle developmental errors."
